Do I Need California Motorcycle Insurance? Article Written by Mission Personal Injury Lawyers

California has the highest number of registered motorcycles in the country — nearly 800,000. With its scenic views and pleasant weather, it’s no wonder that the state is so popular with bikers. Unfortunately, having so many motorcycles on the road also means more motorcycle accidents.

In California, motorcyclists have the same financial responsibilities as motorists. This includes the requirement that riders maintain insurance to ride legally within the state.

What Are the Minimum Insurance Requirements for California Motorcyclists?

California mandates the following minimum levels of liability insurance:

  • $15,000 bodily injury liability coverage for injuries to one person in an accident
  • $30,000 bodily injury liability coverage for total injuries in an accident
  • $5,000 property damage liability coverage

Keep in mind these requirements only include liability coverage for damage you cause to others. This coverage doesn’t protect you. While other types of insurance are not required for motorcyclists in California, it’s a good idea to consider additional forms of insurance when purchasing an insurance policy.

What Other Types of Motorcycle Insurance Are Available in California?

If you’re involved in a motorcycle accident, it can be especially serious because you have no external protection. As a result, the injuries from a motorcycle accident are likely to be severe and may even result in death. That means steep medical expenses, lost income while you’re out of work, and other losses that can easily exceed the coverage available through the other driver’s insurance — and you’ll be liable for taking care of your own injuries beyond that amount.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM)

Purchasing underinsured motorist coverage provides you with coverage if the costs of your injuries exceed the coverage available through the other driver’s insurance. If your injury costs $50,000 and the other driver covers $15,000 through their insurance, you’re still left with $35,000 in bills. If you have underinsured motorist coverage, however, it will cover the remainder, depending on the amount you’ve purchased.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM)

Uninsured motorist coverage is similar to underinsured coverage and pays out for your injuries if you were in an accident caused by a driver who was uninsured.
